SHEARER - MGM PANAVISION MEMO PAGE 1

The following six page memo from MGM R&D director Douglas Shearer, (yep, he's Norma's older brother), to Loew's Incorporated president Arthur Loew, explains in surprisingly technical terms, the features, functions and benefits of the 65MM photographic system that MGM developed with Panavision, Inc. Prior to taking over all technical R&D for MGM, Shearer received screen credit for sound for virtually every MGM feature between 1929 and 1955. Some of the numerical values in the memo are not perfectly correct, but they're in the ballpark. In the interest of expediency, I am initially providing this memo without my usual analytical commentary to illuminate the content. An update will provide the commentary in the near future. It should be noted that this memo appears to have been produced at some time after the system drawing supplied earlier.

Thanks to Dave Kenig of Panavision, Inc. for providing this material for your benefit.
